He made his league debut on 6 August 2004 as a substitute for Paraguayan striker Nelson Valdez in a 1–0 home win against Schalke 04. In March 2004, Klose signed a four-year contract with Werder Bremen for a €5 million ($6.2 million) transfer fee. He scored 16 goals in the 2001–02 season and was shy of only two goals to become the top scorer.

In 1998, Klose's professional career began at age 20 with a switch to the reserves at former Bundesliga outfit FC Homburg.
